Using layer mask allow people to make selective adjustment easily. For this select layer>Duplicate layer. Now you can go ahead to make the adjustment want to make the whole image. If you like to sharpen the image but not to the background then add up a mask by clicking add layer mask in the layer panel. Having done this you get a white rectangle to the right of the layer and this is mask. •  Get the brush tool and paint in black the area you don't want to apply the adjustment.
